I've asked my parents like, a ton of times and they say the same thing. "There's creeps out there and they like tall blonde girls!" I told them that i can set my profile 2 private, only accept friends that i actually know, set my location 2 somewhere outta the US, and that they can get a myspace themselves to monitor me.... but it doesnt change their minds. i tell them that EVERYONE has 1 and all my mom does is say not everyone! jessica and grace dont have one! its super annoying! i even try to say that im not stupid. its not like imma go on there and be all like ya i live here and go to this school and blah blah blah! i mean seriously! they wont even let me look at my friends myspaces! its sad and it sucks cuz when my friends ask me if i have 1, i have 2 say im not allowed to.... i'm one of the very few people in my school who dont have a myspace....... anything else i could tell my parents to let me have one??? please no lectures saying how dangerous it is. im smart. i know.... thanx

My ten year will be in 2010, and I have no intention of going. I am still friends with all of the people I liked in high school, and because of Myspace, have been in contact with those I knew and lost touch with. And I am not someone who would go to showoff about my life.

I KNOW what my child does. Because we share. She knows of at least 25 students she associates with at school who have "private" myspace accounts without their parents knowledge. I also have both, started out with myspace then got a facebook at the urging of a friend...I never use myspace, I use facebook daily though. MySpace has well over 200 million active users, while Facebook has 51 million.

However, Facebook has experienced tremendous growth in number of users after changing the restrictions to allow anyone with e-mail to join. It only had 20 million users in April.

In the future I see Facebook taking over as users get fed up with the frequency in which MySpace crashes and the constant addition of more advertisements that clutter up the page. Facebook has slowly been adding features to promote more interactivity and use with the site, while still having the same clean interface.

There is this person that goes to our school who made a myspace account where they post bad things about people who go to our school. They are suppose to snitch on them for anything that they do, or just make up rumors like,''So and so is a h.o.e." ect.

There was this one guy who went around tossing papers around campus as an ad for the myspace page.

Nobody knows for sure who did it, but there are lots of suspects. Even the teachers are in on it.

well i find it annoying myself, that myspace is blocked at schools. but i think they are going to far with the whole blocking. and i find it even more annoying and stupid that some schools [private only as far as i have heard] have been making students delete whatever blog they are using [myspace, xanga, livejournal, etc.] or they will get in major trouble with the school. myspace to me should be "legal" in schools. students are not always able to access a computer at home, and would use school for internet use, but they can't fully take advantage of that luxury because the school's don't allow it. they do tho allow hi5 at my school. so there are always alternatives. you could talk about alternative sites that you can go to on your school's computers.

I'm not a huge fan of the "Oh noes there are peadophiles on the Internets and they're going to get my kids!" argument against Myspace, but I don't have a problem with it being blocked in school.

Fact: although there have been some well-publicised cases of stalking and drug dealing on Myspace, the same can be said for the telephone, email, pagers, text messaging, and any other method where two people communicate with each other.

Fact: despite all its benefits, Myspace doesn't really offer anything educational (at least, not the type of educational they want you to learn in school).

Fact: school computers are paid for by tax dollars that are earmarked for education. Makes sense that you should be encouraged to use them for educational purposes, right?

Fact: cell phones, another communication tool, are banned from many (most?) schools because they are a disruption to learning. If cell phones - which aren't owned by the school - can be regulated, then doesn't it make sense the school should be able to regulate the content available on their own computers as well?

Those would be points I would bring up, if it were my paper.

you know what we did to entertain, cuz mind you , even cell phones werent that big then either...we had those scientific calculators that you could program very cheasy basic games on.

It clearly states that if a student is caught on an adult site, he will not be able to use any computer for the rest of the school year. There really is no way around this since they blocked it. It is there property and internet so you have no choice. The only way to get it would be to get on at your home.

Your best bet is to go home to get on MySpace. Obviously the computer people at your school are keeping an eye on proxy sites being used on their system, since vtunnel used to work but doesn't anymore. So even if you get another proxy from an answer and it works, it probably won't work for long.

Going home means you have a better chance of getting onto MySpace AND you won't get into trouble with the school for visiting sites that are against the computer rules. If your work is all done and you have time to kill on the computers at school, quit trying to sneak around the rules and stick to sites that they haven't blocked.

Unless you crack/hack into the Sonicwall firewall appliance, which is located in the server room of your IT department, you have absolutely ZERO chance to go beyond what the IT department allows as traffic inbound and outbound.

You can use proxys, and it's fine you will get to the front page of myspace, minus some graphics and the whole natural look of the webpage, but as soon as you click on login, you will get a Screen telling you you are not authorized to access this page. Your attempts has been logged by the IT dpt.

I find the myspace issue of the school punishing not only the poster who threatened a girl but also those who visited the site very disturbing. I know you don't want to hear this, but you shouldn't even try because that is against the acceptable use policy at your school. They have sites blocked for a reason and trying to bypass their security is called hacking and will get you banned from using any of their their computers and probably even suspended or expelled. They track everything you do and you will get caught. Not being able to use the computers at all would suck way worse than just using them to view allowed sites - wouldn't it?

I am a studen in high school. I understand that going on game sites and places like facebook and myspace are distracting at school but what if someones in an academic lab. Ya its a time to study but sometimes you have nothing to study and are just plain bored. I believe that if a teacher looks on a students computer it is an invasion of privacy. If a student is checking an email and something important is in there it gives the teacher NO right to read it. I am in school, I have been in your situation- I know almost exactly what you mean. I finished those lab assignments SO FAST and I was bored to tears in that lab. Bring a book, do something else, but assume that someone will see everything you look at on a public computer. Especially since schools have to be such hard-ends about discipline. The point is, since these are lab computers, your school has every right know every letter you type in there.

Lawyers, please correct me if I'm wrong, but since it isn't a public computer, but a school lab machine, they're justified in looking at pretty much whatever- (I would assume as long as they're not simply snooping- but to prove that a teacher was simply snooping would be pretty difficult, since part of their job is to help a class maintain discipline.)

You should have learned by now that there is NO privacy on the Internet the way there is if you use first-class mail and that any message you upload will probably be stored in more than one server. By the way, you should also realize that if you accidentally access some child pornography from a European web site and store it on your home computer and the police find out about it, you could be arrested as a sex offender.

(I myself, by the way, like to access porn on the web and beat off to it. But I will never do so in a public library.)

The bottom line is if you want to do something on your school system that is not directly related to schoolwork, it would be a good idea to clear it first with whoever on the staff may be watching you.

You obviously are a smart guy. I am sure you can find all sorts of educationally useful web surfing that will amuse you when you get bored in school.

Sorry. The school owns the computers so they say what you can and cannot do. The same rules apply when you go to work. Your employer has every right to see what you are doing on his equipment.

You may not be allowed to see what your teacher is doing at the computer, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the school board has that right!

If you're so very bored, practice your typing or study punctuation. You'll find both of them more useful than complaining about things you can't change.

This tells the student that when they are in school and using school computers, they are subject to being monitored on their computer use. I also have her sign in info so that I can read messages and friend requests sent to her. She is not allowed to approve or request friends without my approval. I've never had any problems with her on myspace, although I have had to put a few unsupervised kids in line. Offer to give your parents the same access, maybe it'll help.

Here is a suggestion that my son and I reached about myspace and maybe it will work with you.

He set up an email account that was monitored by us. This account was one that we both could read what was posted.

He could not list any personal information about himself on that sight until he turned 18.

When he got a friend's request it had to be someone we both personally knew. If someone from his school wanted to add their name to his list we had to meet them first. Yes some of his friends did tease him about that, but he took it in good stride.

We showed him and talked to him about our concerns. We showed him articles about what was listed about preditors in these sights. We asked him how if he was allowed to make a sight how could we be sure he was kept safe.

This is the only suggestion I have that might work and also show a little bit of trust on both ends.

I did this in school.

You have a few options.

1. Try to sign on as the administrator to the PC instead of the network.

try username: admin or administrator

passwords: either blank or password or anything else generic school name etc.

2. At your home, look for a site that provides many proxy servers and then test all of them.

I did this 3 years ago and it worked great. Teachers did not know how i was getting on the internet. Plus, if you stay off the network, you can not be tracked with the security system.

Chances are though, you will get caught becuase most school admins have caught on to most of this stuff.

As a parent, I think all websites like myspace should be banned from schools. Your not there to chat with your pals, your there to learn. Not only that, some parents do not allow their children to go onto websites like that at home so they sneak and do it at school. (which I strongly disagree with)

Bottom line is that there is too much crap on the web to just set our kids free to explore!

I think it for one distracts from studies. And also I dont think schools want to be liable for anything that could happen to a kid on the computer. If say they met a guy on the internet and get murdered. You would see alot of angry folks! Myspace is a thing now. I had a myspace back before it was everywhere! I dont have one now. The content block is ridiculus, it once prevented me from getting pics of gilGAMESh cause it had the word "games" in it.

Your school's firewalls are there for the explicit purpose of preventing not educational use of the network. Your agreement to use their network specifically outlines your responsibilities and restrictions on network use.

I suggest you stop trying to circumvent the policies on a network you DON"T PAY FOR!

If you want to update your Facebook/Myspace/Other, then I suggest you get on an internet connection you PAY FOR or go to a place where internet access is free (Starbucks, web Cafe's etc.) and use your own equipment and do so on your own time.

It's amazing how people feel that they have the right to utilize systems that they don't pay for. What if I got a cordless phone and drove up in your driveway and used your phone system to make long distance calls? Would you be willing to continue to pay the bill? Then once you realize that how I was doing it, you spent the extra $$ to purchase a more expensive 'secure phone'. But, hey... I have a buddy who works for the phone company that shows me how to tap into your line and continue to make my calls and stick you with bill. What you are trying to do is no different.

Its called a Proxy Server, and what it does is disguise your IP address from other servers. Like in your case, the school's server. So, the school's server is programmed to block every IP adress registered to the school from MySpace or FaceBook. But, if your IP address is masked, then none will be the wiser!

Once there, type in the URL of the site you wish to anonymously browse, into the text field under th words "Enter a URL to visit:" It will re-direct you to another page, where you will be asked for the URL of the site again, and then Bada-bing! You are browsing the internet anonymously!

The good thing about myspace is that its very open, with comments and friends being public,

myspace is a perfectly safe service/website so long as you take certain precautions...such as....never give away personal details e.ge phone number, address etc. All rude/crude/harmful content is banned and blocked and removed so you child can never see anything unappropriate...depending on their age group i would suggest that the only add members of their school/class and other people they already know, and not add strangers....of course that is up to your and their own best judgement..hope this helps...

My school is doing a search on Myspace users and is punishing the students after a few students got into a fight due to it. Is this allowed or even reasonable? I don't think this is fair as the whole school has to pay for the actions of a few.

It's not fair at all, in fact that's a bit communistic in my opinion. I agree that myspace can be a very dangerous website because kids share way too much information there. All you have to do is read the national papers online and you'll see some kid that got kid napped because he or she was using myspace. It's not always the kids fault however, parents need to educate their children about myspace and the internet in general. There are some very bad people on that website, convicted felons acting like kids, so be very careful what you say because you never know who sees your profile, especially if it's public!

Even so, I do not feel that any school or any other public institution has the right to regulate what you can and cannot look at or use simply based on a fight. Now if it posed a threat to their network due to viruses, hackers, and so forth then I could understand.

Just be very careful what you put on your profile, even though you may feel that the only people that will see it are your friends. Bad people are every where!!!

I don't think school officials spend all day searching Myspace for students. There was a high school not far from me where students posted pictures of themselves drinking at a party. And school officials found out about it. They were suspended from sports(if they were playing) and police issued tickets for underage drinking.

Most people will add you and I'm sure they will talk to you on Facebook and then you'll have lots of new friends! If it is blocked and you access it (even through a proxy site) you will probably get suspended or expelled because you violated the Internet Usage Agreement you agreed to before you even began using the Internet there. If you get caught, you will loose all use of the schools system. If you, by your stupidity, cause harm to the system by bringing-in a virus, trojan, or other nasty, you can get either suspended or EXPELLED, and your folks will have to pay for the repairs to the system, and computer repair tech time isn't cheep! But you cannot get on it anonymously, your computers IP leaves traces, your schools IT Department will know you are on there. Although, I doubt they will do anything except block the circumventor, there are new ones every other day.

There are always bulletins going around saying it's not okay for middle schoolers to be on m yspace, the young 11-13 year olds.

To what extent do you agree or dissagree?

I disagree because I think it's okay for them to be on there as long as they have private accounts, wiht only known friends as myspace friends, and having appropriate photos displayed.

I have no problem with it until a middle schooler starts getting on the slutty side.
